Sports Industry

I’ve always wanted to work in the sports industry. When I met Kaitlin Alexander and knew she worked in sports, I knew I wanted to interview her and learn about her firsthand experience. This is what Kaitlin shared with me.

I asked how she started in the sports industry, and she responded, “I went to the University of Florida for college and I studied Broadcast Journalism and I was in the premiere sports journalism program in the country.

So, I had the opportunity to get into sports and it just happened, I attended a lot of games, and this girl that I know was kind of like a mentor role model to me. She asked, ‘Have you ever thought about getting into this sector of journalism? And I didn’t.”

“Ultimately sports opened more doors than news did. I followed it through until it stopped for me.”

I went on to ask her what was the most challenging thing about working in sports as a woman and as a Christian.

Challenging as a Christian

Kaitlin Alexander responded, “So I think the most challenging is even just in general being in marketing and media is that you always have to be on. So definitely have gone through making sure I’m on and that I represent Christ and I represent who I am as a person and as a female.

I think that’s key is to represent yourself well, but also to represent Christ. As Christians it’s important we find our identity in God and not in what we do. That is what’s most important.”

I also asked what she might say to females who might want to get into sports… She responded:

“As a woman especially if you weren’t an athlete, I think a lot of women who were athletes have a leg up in a sense. You have to understand that the business is hard and that it’s getting easier for minorities as well as females, but is still a white-owned male business.

But you also have to understand who you are as a person. I know that my in was that I’m a storyteller. But I had an in because I knew them as a person and I talked to them as a person and I told stories.

You just never know what doors could open. If God leads you that way anything can happen.”

Christian Perspective

I asked her if she was able to interview athletes from a Christian perspective, and she said, “If given the opportunity, like when I interviewed Tim Tebow in college, I covered his Night to Shine events and raised money for the event by doing these celebrity golf classic events at the TPC Sawgrass and I saw him be like Jesus.

Giving up his shoes coming to the event barefoot and I asked him Tebow where are your shoes? And I got the story because of that question.

I think as Christians we definitely can be persecuted for our faith, whether that’s in the workplace or just in general. God says we will face persecution, but to take heart for he has overcome the world.

As a Christian, we know that we’re the 10 percent. You have to be a light you have to walk into each day as a light and know that you’re representing Christ. And you just have to pray over each day.”

I asked Kaitlin what she thought the positives and negatives of the sports world are she replied,

“I think the positive is that no matter what happens good or bad in this world that sports are always going to bring people together. That it’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be a reason why people celebrate and are happy and excited of what’s to come.

What people are searching for

I think at the end of the day that’s what people are searching for, what am I doing in life and what does this mean? What is the reason I’m on this earth?

As an athlete they have a lot of pressure, but if they can understand their purpose and mission that will help them in the long run by helping their family, and using their resources in a good way. Realistically, people chase after fame and fortune, and in the end that doesn’t get you anywhere.”

I asked Kaitlin what she thought of God blessing you when you seek Him first,

Never say never

“I think getting back to sports, I’m somebody that should’ve never worked a Super Bowl or been on the sidelines talking to players like Tom Brady. I grew up on stage, I wanted to be a journalist but how I started was critiquing theatre shows. So, how it happened with sports is that I loved sports because I watched it with my dad. It was a way for us to connect and I also am a storyteller and think of things in different ways.

I think as Christians we see opposition and look at it as a bad thing, we can read the Bible and see every person in the Bible doesn’t matter who it was. If it was Paul, Joseph, Jacob they all faced opposition. They’ve all faced fear they’ve also faced the unknown.

Just thinking of Mary and her confidence, like God, I’ll carry this baby, the Son of God. So, she was able to raise him and I think having examples like that and turning to them has helped me face the opposition I’ve faced in my life and the challenges and fears.

I think everyone’s chasing after their purpose and if you can share with people their purpose and mission, I think that’s the best way to lead them to Christ.”

Life verse

Kaitlin said, “My life verse is Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. That God will work all things out. Also, that I’m called to a greater purpose, I’m called to represent Christ no matter what I do. “

My last question was about how are women treated in sports.

“I think biblically is that, you look at women in the Bible that have overcome a lot of things like Esther, Mary countless others as well.

All these rules for women and guys had no rules. I think just as a female I think the rules and standard needs to be you are beautiful you are amazing, kind, you are brave. Even if you’ve gone through a lot which I’m someone that has. I am not my past, I am my future and I think you have to put on what you want to be, what you envision to yourself to be.

And I think just be true to yourself and know your worth I think everything will happen once you understand that.”

Speaking of God

After speaking to Katilin Alexander about her experience it’s good to see solid Christians in the sports industry who have made an impact. Thank God for Kaitlin Alexander and her story.

So, no matter what, if you go to God then go to work, God will bless you for it. Kaitlin Alexander is a great example of that and is a testament to what God can do in us and through us.

If you’re wondering does God want me to do something with sports? Pray about it. Ask God what is your will. Ask God if is this an idol or something you want me to be a part of.

Thank you for reading this article I hope you enjoyed it! I really enjoyed interviewing Kaitlin Alexander and seeing a Christian perspective on the sports industry!
