Super Bowl Sunday and a Story for the ages

The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the biggest game of the year, well for football anyway. Have you ever thought of it as being something spiritual?

Sports, in general, point us to competition and competing for a prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

The Super Bowl is a competition for a prize, but aren’t we competing in life for a similar prize of our own? Aren’t we running the race for eternal glory?

An unlikely Super Bowl hero

While the Rams won on Sunday, as Christians we know that in Christ, we are all champions. Ironically enough this reminds me of the St. Louis Rams in 1999 and Kurt Warner and his movie American Underdog.

In the movie, Warner overcomes multiple challenges to get to the NFL and win the Super Bowl with the Saint Louis Rams. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers but was then released. In order to make money, he had to restock shelves at a grocery store.

He then played Arena Football where he threw multiple touchdowns with the Iowa Barnstormers. He was approached by the St. Louis Rams and was signed on as the backup.

An unexpected turn of events

After the starting quarterback gets hurt, Warner plays and takes the team to the Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl, they beat the Tennessee Titans and are World Champions.

Warner is a Christian and fights the good fight and finishes the race.

You see the Superbowl can show us stories that ultimately point to Christ. Warner is a perfect example of being someone who was stocking at a grocery store and then made it to the NFL and won the ultimate prize.

However, I’m sure he’d the first to tell you that winning a soul is more important than the Superbowl. So, after watching the big game remember while there is a prize in football that the prize, we have won in Christ is greater than a silver football or Superbowl will ever be.

  1. I love how you used the example from American Underdog. Great movie, great player, but greatest prize!!!!
