Many people have done it, people will do it until Jesus comes back… What’s that? Cursing in sports. In high school, I was one to curse now and again. In college, I cursed a lot. Fortunately, God changed me and now I do not curse near as much as I used to.
Now obviously you can’t blame cursing on sports. It is a matter of the heart and the person who is cursing.
However, sports can bring out the worst in people. The Bible says in Colossians 3:8, “But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”
God has given us self-control which is the biggest weapon we can use against cursing and slanderous talk. “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7.
Personally, I struggle with this especially when I’m angry. For the most part, I have control of my tongue. However, when I am angry, I tend to lose control. Obviously, this is not good and not biblical and is something I have been trying to strive to be better at.
The biggest thing is everyone will struggle with sin. Are we repentant of our sin or are we in habitual sin? If we are in habitual sin, we must go to God tell him what we need help with. However, the people who are in a habitual sin that they only are so often doing can’t escape from the reality of their sin really need to search their hearts and lives. They can ask God for help and possibly be accountable to another person.
While yes, we want to be free from all sin, we won’t truly be set free from sin. However, we can improve with the help of the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, do you struggle with cursing in sports or in life in general? Are you living in habitual sin or just sometimes sinning? Either way, you want to repent to God and turn from your sin. Because if we are living in sin, we must ask the question, am I a true follower of Christ?
You can call out to God for salvation and for His help in conquering sin. One verse that speaks to the struggle with sin is I Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
I can read all your blogs and like them but I still didn’t see a way to subscribe. Great writing Zach!
