Cancelled: A Christian perspective on Sports and the Corona Virus Crisis

What the Corona Virus is affecting Christ vs Corona

To say that people are panicked, uneasy, and just down right afraid might be the biggest exaggeration of the decade if not the century. The sports world has definitely been affected as all sports games and events have been cancelled. Including but not limited to NBA, March Madness, MLS, XFL, among others. This is definitely Christ vs Corona.

Some might ask where is God in all of this? Why is this happening?

Signs of the times Christ vs Corona

The Corona Virus is a sign of uncertainty because of the fear of the unknown. In Matthew 24:7 God says, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.…” While this is affecting the sports world ultimately this virus is affecting people’s lives.

How one coach is making a difference

Coach Rick of Saints however isn’t letting this stop him from his ministry to kids. Instead of meeting for PE the founder of Saints is putting different activities online for the parents for kids who can do the activities at home.

Affecting not only sports but life

Sports brings people together and God definitely speaks through sports. Without sports there is a lack of entertainment, people will get restless. When events are cancelled all of a sudden people go into uproar and ultimately this could hurt society.

The Corona virus hasn’t just affected the sports world but also things that we do on a regular basis. Church and school are big ones as well. Pretty much every church or school you can think of is doing online streaming for classes and for Sunday services.

Our Mission Field Christ vs Corona

How we can minister to people during this time? Especially in the sports world where there is a lot of worldliness. We can pray, but we can also share that Jesus is above all of this and that he has a perfect plan for not only them but for the entire world and eternity.

People are more open to the gospel when tragedy strikes. A perfect example would be 9/11 people turned to God in the midst of uncertainty and fear.

Maybe you could use the fact that sports are cancelled as a way to connect with someone. Maybe talk about what sport you like and why you miss it so much. Then you could talk about the Corona Virus and how it’s impacted so many and what you believe.

Maybe you introduce them to Jesus or share about the end times… However, be careful since not everyone knows about end times and that could just create more fear and anxiety.

What the Bible has to say…

While we do not know what will happen next, we definitely see things prophesized in the Bible similar to the things that are happening today. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.” God says in His word that when His return is drawing near there will be times such as these.

Matthew 24:21-22 “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.” Aren’t we experiencing this now? It started with the gun violence at schools, then celebrities such as Kobe Bryant dying, and now the Corona Virus! Unfortunately, this could be an indication that we are nearing end times, but if you’re a Christian we don’t have to fear because in the end we win!

What this means for us

Now can we say for sure we are in the last days? No one really knows. However, the Bible teaches about it that times gets worse and worse until Jesus ultimately comes back. We must have urgency when it comes to these things. We might not have tomorrow so let’s take advantage of today. Don’t become complacent or lukewarm preach the gospel to all the ends of the earth.

What we must realize is God is greater than the Corona Virus. I was thinking about different things and worrying about them due to the Corona Virus cancelling things I wanted to do. One was working for Inter Miami CF.

As I was driving, I saw the back of a license plate frame and it said, “No worries… God’s got this.” In my mind I said thanks God for reminding me you’re in control no matter what.

People are struggling let’s help

It’s one thing to see something like that and be encouraged in the moment. However, do we apply it by trusting God no matter what? A lot of people are struggling with how to make ends meet during this time, people are afraid they’ll get the virus, and others are worried about others getting the virus.

On the radio I heard a young woman who was a hair stylist said she didn’t know how they were going to pay the rent. She also said she was afraid to get the flu because her husband had a weak immune system and if he got the flu would most likely die. I was working with my dad at the time and thought wow I’m fortunate to even get to work right now.

Athletes getting virus Christ vs Corona

Several players in sports have gotten the virus. No one is safe right now, there is literally nothing from keeping this virus from affecting people around the whole world. I don’t know if you read my story on Kobe Bryant who died and was a person people immortalized.

Same thing applies to athletes getting this virus, just because we idolize these players doesn’t mean they’re not susceptible as well.

In light of this let us not give up being in prayer for fellow Christians and Non-Christians who might have this disease as we speak. As it says in the Bible, in 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Pray without ceasing.”
